| USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (DE 413) was commissioned on April 28, 1944, with LCDR Robert W. Copeland, USNR in Command. Following a shakedown and transit of the Panama Canal in the summer of 1944, ROBERTS joined Task Unit 7.4.3 (Taffy 3) in October of 1944. Shortly before dawn on October 25, 1944, ROBERTS was sunk after daringly engaging a superior Japanese Cruiser/Battleship Force in the vicinity of Samar Island, Philippines. |
